(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, July 15 (KUNA) — A former Belgian television presenter of Algerian descent is Belgium’s new foreign minister, local media reported on Friday.
Hadja Lahbib (52) succeeds Sophie Wilmès as Minister of Foreign Affairs. She worked for 20 years as a news presenter at the French-speaking Belgian public radio station RTBF.
Lahbib has no political experience, but sees no problem, VRT reported.
“I have enough experience. I was in the field as a journalist. Maybe now is the time to turn things around in politics,” she told reporters.
She has made documentaries as an overseas journalist in the Middle East, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India.
“I was a privileged witness. Now I have been asked to make decisions and to act,” said Lahbib, born in Belgium to Algerian parents.
She was sworn in today before King Philippe of Belgium. (end)
