PUTRAJAYA: Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (Photo) will lead the Malaysian delegation to the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), to be held in Kigali, Rwanda, from June 21-25.
Wisma Putra, in a statement Tuesday, June 21, said the theme for this year’s CHOGM was “Delivering a Common Future: Connect, Innovate, Transform.”
The theme is seen as timely as the global community grapples with the challenges resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic which has resulted in significant disparities in wealth distribution, access to affordable healthcare and socio-economic development. economic, he said.
“Commonwealth Heads of Government will discuss and exchange views on current and emerging challenges that would affect the Commonwealth family with a view to achieving sustainable and inclusive development,” the statement said.
Wisma Putra emphasized that the Heads of Government will also review current global political and economic developments and deliberate on issues related to governance and rule of law, sustainability, post-Covid-19 recovery, youth, technology and innovation.
A communiqué from CHOGM 2022 and the other three outcome documents – Kigali Declaration on Child Care and Protection Reform; Commonwealth Living Lands Charter: A Commonwealth Call to Action on Living Lands (CALL); and Declaration on Sustainable Urbanization – should be adopted at the end of the Summit.
He said Saifuddin is expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts on the sidelines of the 26th CHOGM to discuss issues of common concern.
The minister will also meet with Malaysian family members residing in Rwanda, Wisma Putra said.
The 26th edition of the CHOGM biennial, originally scheduled for June 26-27, 2020, has been postponed twice due to the spread of Covid-19. – Bernama
