India Jaishankar and UAE Foreign Minister discuss trade and energy

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Tuesday and had discussions on trade, defence, energy and startups. They also exchanged views on the world situation.

The Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, who is on a two-day visit to India, came with a high-level delegation and during the meeting, he and Jaishankar reviewed the continuous progress of bilateral relations in different fields. , since the 14th meeting of the Joint Commission held by them in September 2022, according to the statement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs. They also appreciated the progress made in bilateral relations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, consular affairs, education and food security.

After meeting Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan at Hyderabad House, Jaishankar tweeted, “Always a pleasure to welcome His Highness Sheikh @ABZayed of UAE to India. Our 4th structured meeting this year. Will drive our partnership forward overall strategy.”

During the meeting, the two ministers noted that bilateral trade has recorded significant growth under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which was signed in February this year and entered into force in may.

India’s exports to the UAE between April and September 2022 were around $16 billion, a 24% year-on-year increase, while Indian imports increased by 38 % to reach $28.4 billion over the same period.

According to the statement, “On food safety cooperation within the framework of I2U2, a delegation led by the CEO of ADQ visited India in October 2022 to advance discussions with different stakeholders. IIT Delhi held meetings with its Abu Dhabi partner, ADEK to establish the IIT Delhi Campus in Abu Dhabi Joint Consular Affairs Committee and Manpower JWG meetings were held in October and November 2022.”

The two sides also continued discussions on other areas of cooperation, including energy, health, defense, space, climate change, skills, fintech and startups. The President of CIM and ADIA held a successful meeting of the High Level Working Group on Investments in October 2022 during which the entire trade and investment cooperation was discussed.

The two ministers also exchanged views on the global situation and various regional hot spots as well as the cooperation between the two countries in the UN Security Council.

The meeting was also attended by the UAE MOS for International Cooperation, Reem Al Hashimy and Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra. EAM organized a lunch in honor of UAE FM and the accompanying delegation.
