Indian businessman arrested with foreign currency worth more than Rs. 40 million at Lanka airport

Dove: A 45-year-old Indian businessman has been arrested at a Sri Lankan international airport for attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth over 40 million rupees out of the country.

The man, who has not been identified, was arrested by security guards at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on Sunday, the Daily Mirror Lanka reported on Monday.

He came to Sri Lanka on business. Following a search of his suitcase, security officials found 117,000 Canadian dollars and 19,000 euros worth more than Rs 40 million, the report adds.

Security officers checked the passenger’s luggage after he behaved suspiciously. Officials observed the passenger going to the toilets at the airport’s departure terminal several times in a short time, Daily News Lanka reported.

He was due to board an Indigo flight to Chennai. The passenger and his consignment of foreign currency were handed over to customs officers at Katunayake Airport for further investigation.

The foreign currency had been confiscated while the passenger was ordered to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000.
