Navy Chief Calls Iraqi Navy Commander and Foreign Minister

ISLAMABAD – Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi is on an official visit to Iraq.

During the visit, the navy chief separately called Iraqi Navy Commander Admiral Ahmed Jaasim Maarij and Defense Minister Jumma Inad Sadoon Khattab, according to a statement released by the Pakistan Navy.

Upon his arrival at Navy Headquarters in Basra, the Navy Chief was received by the Commander of the Iraqi Navy, Admiral Ahmed Jaasim Maarij, and presented as a guard of honor.

During the meeting with the Commander of the Iraqi Navy, regional maritime security and professional issues of mutual interest, including bilateral naval collaboration, were discussed. The Navy Chief highlighted Pakistan Navy’s efforts to ensure maritime security in the region, including regional maritime security patrols and participation in Combined Maritime Forces (CMF). The Admiral also visited Um Qasir Naval Base and the Iraqi Naval Academy where he was given a briefing.

Later, during a meeting with Iraqi Defense Minister Jumma Inad Sadoon Khattab, professional issues of common interest, including bilateral defense cooperation, were discussed.

The Navy chief stressed the importance of enhancing interaction between the armed forces of the two countries through exercises and training exchange programs. The Iraqi Defense Minister, while acknowledging the importance of strong bilateral military cooperation in various fields, stressed the strengthening of collaborations in broader military fields.

The navy chief’s visit is expected to strengthen and expand the defense ties between the two countries in general and the navies in particular, the statement added.
