After a long battle that temporarily upset the party, governors elected on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) platform and a few key stakeholders rescued their national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, from dismissal, as requested by some interests within the party .
And in order to further protect the party from an impending crisis that could affect its chances in 2023, the PDP Governors Forum, the Board of Trustees (BoT) and other organs of the party have brought the National Convention forward to the end of October.
The party was in crisis after some national officials resigned and some stakeholders called for the national chairman to resign because they were labeled bad leadership.
The current National Working Committee (NWC), headed by Secondus, was elected in December 2017 for a four-year term.
How Secondus was saved
A top party source at the meeting said draft Trusting that the party leaders who attended the meeting have agreed that the current NWC, under the leadership of Secondus, will continue until Sept.

At the end of the meeting, Secondus’ position was ignored and it was decided to end October.

The chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal spoke to journalists at the end of the stakeholder meeting, which lasted two and a half hours on Tuesday, at Wadata Plaza, the party’s headquarters in Abuja.
He said: “The meeting deliberated extensively on the issues raised and decided that the Constitution, traditions and practices of the Party should be strictly observed in seeking solutions to any problem.”
Flanked by BoT members, the governors elected on the party program and former chairmen of the National Assembly, among others, Tambuwal said: “There have been extensive consultations with all key stakeholders in the party, including the governors, members of the Board of Trustees, former chairmen and current officers and leaders the National Assembly, former governors, former ministers and also other party leaders, in order to bring together all tendencies within the party, in the face of the urgent task facing the only party, a useful vehicle to checkmate the abysmally bad governance of the APC-led federal government put.”
He said, “That meeting agreed that the NEC should be convened immediately so that the party would form the planning committee for the National Congress, and the National Congress should be held by the end of October at the latest.
“The meeting urged the NEC to immediately set up a zone committee for party offices and another committee for national electoral offices.”
“The party’s NEC will most likely meet next week and any issues will be addressed. And this NEC would be convened by the party’s chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, who is constitutionally empowered to do so, ”he said.

Earlier, in his remarks before the actual meeting, Tambuwal said: “We are determined to remain in the PDP. Ignore every rumor, every rumor that one of these respected leaders is going anywhere. We are in PDP, we will stay in PDP and by the grace of God we will work together to save Nigeria.
“When you say you’re going where? APC is not a party. They don’t have a church structure as we speak. You don’t have a local government structure as we speak. They don’t have state structures as we speak. They don’t have a national structure as we speak. APC has never had a board of trustees, nor does it have one.
“So where are you going? Are you going over to the federal government? The federal government is not there because when it is, ask my colleagues at APC; one of them came out to say he saw no help when his students were kidnapped.” He got no help from the federal government and is governor of APC, so what are we talking about?
“There is no party to go over to; there is no government to defend to. We better stay together and work together, reinvent our party and work towards the formation of a government in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, ”he said.
BoT chairman, Secondus call for unity
In his remarks, the chairman of the PDP BoT Senator Walid Jibrin called on important representatives and members of the party to avoid personal interests and to make way for a lasting peace in the party.
He said: “Only when there is peace in our party can we talk about winning the election. APC has failed Nigerians and most citizens are waiting for the PDP. “
The party’s national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, also called for peace and unity within the PDP.
“This party will continue to remain in peace and unity. We urge every Nigerian to register as a member of the party with the ongoing electronic registration. This is important because the PDP is the only party that can save this country from the hands of APC. “
In attendance were all 13 PDP governors, Zamfara State Deputy Governor Mahdi Aliyu Gusau, former Chair of the National Assembly, including the immediate former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki, his predecessors – David Mark and Adolphus Ndaneweh Wabara, who is BoT Secretary .
Others include the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Umar Ibrahim Tsauri, and the Deputy National Chairman North Senator Suleiman Nazif.
