Statement on Secretary Blinken’s Meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu

The following is the text of a joint statement issued by the governments of the United States and Turkey.

Beginning text:

US Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken and Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu met in New York on May 18 under the US-Turkey Strategic Mechanism to reaffirm their close cooperation as partners and allies of the NATO.

The United States and Turkey are committed to working closely together to address today’s geopolitical challenges. Secretary Blinken and Foreign Minister Cavusoglu intend to deepen bilateral cooperation through constructive and open dialogue, as envisaged by the US Strategic Mechanism for Turkey.

They discussed means and assessed concrete measures to strengthen their cooperation on issues of defence, the fight against terrorism, energy and food security, the fight against climate change and the strengthening of commercial ties, while agreeing to intensify consultations on a range of regional issues.

They also reiterated their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s unacceptable war. In this context, the United States and Turkey reaffirmed their support for finding a solution to end the war.
