“We are experiencing a remarkable, almost revolutionary transformation. We are reducing dependence on imported fuels by promoting biofuel blending, green hydrogen and the introduction of electric vehicles,” said Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Housing and Urban Affairs during the launch of the AVGAS 100 LL. Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, in the presence of General (Dr.) VKSingh (Retired), Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Road Transport and Highways, launched AVGAS 100 LL, a special aviation fuel for piston engine aircraft and unmanned Ariel vehicles. Currently, India imports this product from European countries. The launch event hosted by Indian Oil at Hindan Airforce Station was attended by senior Indian Airforce officials, senior officials from MoPNG and MoCA, and officials from Flight Training Organizations (FTOs).

Underlining the importance of the launch of the indigenous AV GAS 100 LL, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas mentioned that the launch of the indigenous AV GAS 100 LL is important to meet the needs of the booming aviation industry with a increased attendance at airports, an increase in a number of aircraft and flight training organizations (FTOs) in student aircraft for future pilot training. As the demand for air transport in India is expected to increase significantly in the future, there will also be a huge demand for trained pilots. And for this, the number of FTOs should also increase significantly, he added.

Speaking about the launch of the indigenous AV GAS 100 LL, General (Dr.) VK Singh (retired) Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Road Transport and Highways said that the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas under the guidance of Shri Hardeep Puri made efforts to launch the native AV GAS 100 LL which we imported before. As part of Prime Minister’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, IOCL has developed AV Gas 100 fuel which has been imported so far at huge cost. This will ensure that all of our flight schools and other smaller aircraft that use AV Gas 100 LL can purchase it from local sources and save money. This will make a huge difference for us in terms of exporting to regions and countries that need AV Gas 100 LL fuel, he added.

Indian Oil Chairman Shri Shrikant Madhav Vaidya said, “Indian Oil is proud to introduce this specialty fuel by leveraging our refining strength and in-house expertise. In fact, the native fuel is superior compared to the imported grades. The AV Gas Market is expected to grow from the current $1.92 billion to $2.71 billion by 2029. We plan to set up a new facility soon to target export opportunities, in addition to responding to the domestic demand. I am confident that the superior quality we offer, combined with competitive prices, will give us a significant edge in the global market and open a new chapter in India’s self-reliance journey.

The movement towards Aatma Nirbhar Bharat:

Currently, AVGAS 100 LL is a fully imported product. Domestic production of AVGAS 100 LL produced by Indian Oil at its Gujarat refinery will make flight training more affordable in India. This product, which powers aircraft operated by FTOs and defense forces, has been imported by India for decades. Indian Oil’s R&D, refinery and marketing teams have achieved this feat of indigenous production and delivered a price advantage to the industry.

IndianOil: Leading the Change

A leading grade of aviation gasoline, AVGAS 100 LL is designed for use in turbocharged reciprocating engine aircraft, primarily used by FTOs and Defense Forces for pilot training.

The AV GAS 100 LL produced by IndianOil’s flagship refinery in Vadodara has been tested and certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Indian Government’s statutory body responsible for regulating civil aviation in India . It is a high octane aviation fuel meeting product specifications with superior performance quality standards, compared to imported grades.

The local availability of AV GAS 100 LL will help reduce dependence on imports and address associated logistical challenges. The country will be able to save valuable foreign currency due to the internal availability of this product.

This will also benefit over 35 FTOs across India. With the nationwide availability of this product, the Ministry of Civil Aviation plans to open more training institutes in the country. Given the increase in air traffic, the need for trained pilots is expected to increase.
