Vietnamese Foreign Minister meets Indonesian President Joko Widodo

VIETNAM, July 20 –

JAKARTA – Vietnamese Foreign Minister Bùi Thanh Sơn paid a courtesy visit to Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta on Wednesday.

President Joko Widodo welcomed Minister Sơn’s visit to co-chair the fourth meeting of the Joint Bilateral Cooperation Committee (JCBC-4) with his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi amid the newly reopened two countries, demonstrating their determination to promote the Việt Nam-Indonesia strategic partnership, especially as both sides are to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the establishment of this partnership in 2023.

The Indonesian President also praised Việt Nam for its significant achievements in fighting the pandemic and regaining momentum for rapid socio-economic development, and in particular hosting the 31st SEA Games in May.

The Vietnamese diplomat thanked and conveyed to President Joko Widodo the greetings of Party General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng, State President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính and other senior Vietnamese leaders; reaffirming Việt Nam’s constant position that it always attaches importance to the strategic partnership with Indonesia and wishes to develop it further.

Việt Nam also expressed confidence that Indonesia will successfully fulfill the role of G20 chair, implement “Indonesia Vision 2045” and become a developed country by the 100th anniversary of its independence in 2045.

Minister Sơn said that during the JCBC-4 meeting, he would work with his Indonesian counterpart Retno Marsudi to review what the two sides have done so far, the difficulties and issues that need to be resolved since the JCBC was held. -3 in Hà Nội in 2018, as well as to propose guidelines for strengthening cooperation both at the bilateral and multilateral levels in order to effectively carry out the action program for the implementation of the strategic partnership between the two countries for the period 2019-23.

Minister Sơn expressed his wish that the Indonesian President supports the two parties in promoting the exchange of delegations and contacts at all levels; reduce barriers and promote trade in a more balanced direction; sign as soon as possible a memorandum of understanding on bilateral rice cooperation for the next four years; remove obstacles and create favorable conditions for companies from both countries to increase their investments, especially in the areas of fisheries, high technology and the digital economy; provide technical support and facilitate imports of Halal products of Vietnamese origin to the Indonesian market.

He also asked the Indonesian authorities to increase the frequency of flights and consider opening new routes connecting popular tourist destinations between the two countries; continue to coordinate closely to deal effectively with issues at sea.

Minister Sơn also spoke highly of the cooperative relations between the two countries in regional and international forums, and affirmed that Việt Nam supports Indonesia in its role as ASEAN chair in 2023.

Welcoming the increasingly strong and extensive development of the bilateral cooperation relationship between Việt Nam and Indonesia, President Joko Widodo suggested that the two sides draw up an action plan to develop strategic cooperation for the period. 2024-28, heading towards the goal of having bilateral trade reach US$15 billion by 2028; continue to promote economic cooperation, trade, investment and people-to-people exchanges.

The Indonesian President also conveyed his greetings to Vietnamese leaders. —VNS
